Sam’s latest inspiration for a dream boat idea is inspired by a friend from Down Under! These new study plans comprise 3 drawings (exterior profile with flybridge, exterior sedan profile, accommodations drawings) and Sam’s written musings on the cruising possibilities of this sturdy and seaworthy mini-ship.
The new Kingfisher 28 design idea found inspiration from the 33 foot boat we built a few years back for John Heater that was featured on the cover of a 2017 Passagemaker Magazine. The Kingfisher 33 has been downsized for the many of us who want to head out in something very seaworthy yet under 30 feet. Twin or Island berth forward with a head to port and shower to starboard followed by a couple of steps up to the pilothouse/lounge with a two person dinette to port and captain’s chair and galley to starboard. Sliding doors port and starboard allow for plenty of fresh air in the cabin. We exit aft into a large and covered cockpit with either a transom door or side door to allow easy dock access to the boat. For some the newly reintroduced John Deere 4 cylinder naturally aspirated diesel might be the ticket! For others a 60 to 260 HP Yanmar diesel gives a compact footprint with options for 6-9 cruising at the low end of the HP or comfortable mid teens cruising with 20 knots top speed at the high end of the HP spectrum.
Sam loves the Flybridge feature which made traveling in John Heater’s boat such a great pleasure. Behind the sky helm there’s plenty of room for a dinghy and a proper mast complete with flopper stopper poles.
