Welcome to the Sam Devlin Design Gallery!

Please take some time to explore my present and past boats. The medium of “Stitch and Glue” wood/epoxy composite construction provides me freedom and creative originality that other mediums just cannot evoke. I have published 75 designs in my Design Catalog (currently being revised and reprinted) and there are many more here in the website. I have customized these designs many times to get just the right fit for my customers. Please call me if you have seen a boat here and would like to talk about it. I'm always pleased to talk about my boats. We can discuss your needs and suggest ways we can make it more closely fit your needs, or even do a custom design.

Duck Boats & Sneakboxes

Of all the markets we design and build boats for, the water-fowler presents the toughest customer. He is looking for a stable, efficient hunting tool. One that is reliable in rough bays on a bitter cold day, with performance like his favorite gun and as responsive as his favorite dog. We have set out to meet these demands with strong, lightweight, and most of all, stable and seaworthy boats.

We are pleased to offer the largest selection of quality duck hunting boats in the world.  We use the finest quality marine materials available to yield the strongest, lightest and most durable boats available.

Each size is well suited to its intended purpose and will perform well under heavy hunting use. We offer boats to suit almost every hunting condition from solo hunting to group parties. These boats are custom built to each owner's specifications and needs so there are many options available as well as detailing to suit your special hunting needs.

These boats are intended for heavy use and are constructed with that in mind. The plywood is the finest Marine Mahogany Plywood available and is combined with our “Stitch and Glue” wood/epoxy construction to yield a clearly superior boat. The hardware and fastenings are marine grade of either bronze or stainless steel. For more information on “Devlin Duck Boats”, as well as other brands, go to Eric Patterson's Duck Boat Building Forum. Ask others about the Devlin boats they have built and hunted from. This is a tremendous resource for duck hunting enthusiasts and I applaud Eric’s fine website.

Type of Hunting:

T : Transport

LB : Low Blind

HB : High Blind

LT(# of people) : Layout

SCL(# of people) : Scull

Height Rating : 1 – being lowest, 10 – highest. Takes into account seating height and freeboard of hull above the waterline.

Height : Floorboards to deck at centerline height measurement. NF means boat does not have floorboards so measurement is from the bottom of the boat.

Seaworthiness Factors:

CS : Close to shore

OW : Open Water

Scale: 1 - calm, 10 - gale conditions

18MM -- ¾” thickness

Fiberglass cloth

Six ounce fiberglass cloth (epoxy compatible) of 50” or 60” width suitable for sheathing the exterior of the boat, and as a finishing cloth tape over Biaxial tape structural interior seams.

Biaxial Cloth Tape

Twelve ounce knit fiberglass cloth of double bias construction, cut into rolls of 4 width and 6” width. For use in making structural fillets of major hull seams and structural bulkheads. Laminated over Wood/Flour epoxy fillets wet on wet in narrowest—widest layered sequence.

Epoxy Resin

Marine grade epoxy resin of a type compatible with the construction of Stitch and Glue constructed vessels. Assumes proper mixed ratio’s of resin and hardener products as provided by the epoxy manufacturer.

Wood Flour

Cellulose product used alone or in combination with Cabosil as a filling and thickening agent for mixed epoxy resin.

Cabosil

An additive to use to thicken mixed epoxy resin made from fumed siliceous, can be used alone or in combinations with wood flour to yield thixotropic (non-sagging) fillets and fillers. When used alone results in a high-density filler medium that may be very hard to sand.

SS. SMS

Stainless Steel sheet metal screws with a variety of head configurations such as Flat Head (FH) or Pan Head (PH) and with slotted, Phillips, or Robertson (Square Drive) heads. In all cases Bronze may be substituted in any case for Stainless Steel, but by no means use brass for any marine applications.

Polyurethane Caulk

A caulking material usually dispensed out of a caulking gun type tube. This caulking material is suitable for bedding and structurally fastening of marine type hardware and fitting to a Stitch and Glue constructed vessel Such as 3M #5200, or Sikaflex 241 caulk.

Scarfing

A method of joining sheets of Marine Plywood into longer sheets, use 1-8 scarf ratio minimum.

O.C.

On center spacing of fastenings or measurements.

I.L.S.

Interior Lamination Schedule, (2) layers of Biaxial tapes in 4-6 widths with staggered layers over Wood Flour/Epoxy Fillet, applied wet on wet. This is used on longer boats, such as the Cackler, Snow Goose, Honker and Scaup

E.L.S.

Exterior Lamination Schedule, a single layer of 6 ounce fiberglass cloth sheathing over all exterior surfaces of hull and deck, making sure to overlap whenever practical. All exterior joints and seams must have a minimum of (2) layers of fiberglass over them.

Note : Hull exterior and decks sheathed with (1) layer minimum 6 ounce fiberglass cloth and epoxy resin reinforced with double layers on all seams and edges.

W.E.S.T. Construction

Wood construction method that stands for (Wood-Epoxy-Sealing-Technique) and allows that all wood used in the structure of the boat be sealed and encapsulated in epoxy resin. Epoxy Resin is also used in the structural gluing of all surfaces of the vessel. It is necessary to cover over the epoxy resin with multiple layers of opaque paints to provide Ultra-Violet protection for the cured epoxy surfaces.

Cold Molding

Additional layers of plywood laminated over hull core plywood to build up to designed ultimate skin thickness. Most often ¼” or 6 mm plywood is used for this purpose. Used only as an option on Snow Goose and Honker designs.

Wire Stitches (Sutures)

Wire used to stitch the hull panels of the boat together until the joints can be bonded with epoxy resin and fiberglass cloth reinforcement. The wires simply serve a function of clamping together parts until the glue sets and then are pulled completely out of the structure. 16 gauge galvanized electric fence wire is the most economical type of wire to use and is available from feed stores and hardware stores almost anywhere.

Half Oval

A brass or stainless steel half oval rod of metal usually available from marine stores or a metal outlet. Attaches to the hull with #8 SS.SMS on about 8 inches O.C.. Used for chafe and abrasion protection on the bottom of keels and bilge keels. Bed into place over polyurethane caulk.

Polyurethane Foam

2-part pour in place foam used to add positive floatation to smaller boats.
