It’s Showtime!

Here we go! Sam is wrapped in the mad scramble it takes to prepare for two major boat shows in a row.

First up is the Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival this weekend, September 9, 10, and 11th at the Northwest Maritime Center in Port Townsend. This show is packed with events, boats, learning opportunities, vendors, food, and fun activities for the kids. If you’ve never been, it’s a great way to spend a day, or an entire weekend.

Sam will be there with lots of great Devlin boats, built at the the Devlin shop and by Devlin customers as well. You can talk to Sam about boats that work for you, to owners about what it’s like to own a Devlin boat, and even to those adventurous builders about how it works and how it feels to live with a boat you built with your own hands.

On Thursday evening, at 5PM, Sam is hosting the Wooden Boat Foundation & WoodenBoat Magazine Lifetime Achievement in Boatbuilding & Design. This is where the very best wooden boatbuilders are recognized for their excellence and contributions to the art of wooden boat design and building. As a recipient of this prestigious award, Sam is well placed to introduce the latest winners.

On Friday, he is also participating the in the Yacht Designers Q&A session. It’s safe to say that in the past 38 years, he has seen it all and has a great deal to contribute to the discussion.

For the rest of the show, Sam will be on the docks. Stop by, say hi, and ask him to show you his boats. Speaking of boats, he is featuring two very nice examples for sale. Both have recently undergone extensive renovation to make sure they are ready for immediate and long lasting boating pleasure.

First up is the Zelda Belle, a Surf Scoter 26. She is a full sized cruiser with carefully designed features for comfortable extended cruising and enough power to get to your destination in a hurry. At the show, she is offered for $119,500. She’s also a cover model.

Second is The Gooselodge II, a Surf Runner 25, which is designed to evoke the sporty classic lines of larger runabouts. In typical Devlin fashion, she incorporates many features to take her beyond a runabout into an entirely livable boat for longer journeys. She does it all with grace and comfort. The Gooselodge II is also available for $119,500 at the show.

Next week, Sam will attend the South Lake Union Boats Afloat show in Seattle. It runs from September 14 through he 18th. This show is a bit of different scene. The focus on wooden boats changes into a general boat show full of everything from assembly line sport and fishing boats to yachts made primarily from (gasp!) things like fiberglass. This a good way to compare a lot of styles and building techniques. You can read about the benefits of wooden boats here. If you are looking for a broad overview of the current boating options, Boats Afloat is a good show to attend.

You can see the Zelda Belle and Gooselodge II at this show too, but the feature showing from Devlin Boats will be the grand and stately Edwin S. Dawson, a Devlin Sockeye 45. This is major boat, a trawler-style displacement cruiser that can take you as far as you would ever want to go, in absolute roomy comfort. Bring the entire family or a bunch of friends. There’s room for everyone! She is show priced at $998,900. Built from scratch, she would cost at least twice that much.

Two shows, rapid fire. Come to see Sam and bring all your questions.
